BANANA DENIM (KBD001)

The project began when a designer visited Thailand in 2018 and heard from a friend that banana trees are discarded in large quantities once harvested.

Banana farmers cut down the trees that have been harvested every year and repeatedly grow them from scratch for the next harvest. It is said that more than 1 billion tons of banana trees are discarded annually. In Thailand, the disposal of trees is a major issue, such as CO2 generation due to incineration, global warming, and soil contamination due to the neglect of trees.

After returning to Japan, the designer consulted with a spinning mill in Japan and started a project to make denim using fibers from banana stems that are discarded in large quantities.

It took two years of trial and error (usually about one year) to develop a dedicated yarn. Various difficulties were solved by Japanese craftsmen and technicians to create banana denim.

Denim made of bananas and cotton is a product that realizes a recycling-oriented society. Currently, the number of producers of cotton and linen is decreasing, and the amount of cotton and linen collected is decreasing. We develop the banana denim because we want it to be an alternative to linen.
